Title: Wiesel light armored vehicle

Rapidfire - April 30, 2005 07:29 AM (GMT)
My suggestion for general purpose armored vehicle for the Philippine Army:

This is a relatively cheap (from 50k- 150k euros) light armored vehicle that comes in many variations and perfectly suited to Philippine terrain. The vehicle weighs only 3 tons and completely air transportable. German engineering makes it robust and versatile with cheap and commonly available automotive parts. The Wiesel 1 is currently serving well the German troop contingent in Afghanistan:

'Light' is a misnomer. It should be called 'ultralight'. Makes you wonder how 6' tall and hefty German soldiers fit inside one.

The narrow tracks look flimsy but the versatility of that vehicle is simply impressive.

Duminus - April 30, 2005 09:23 AM (GMT)
Any vehicle that provides protected mobility and firepower to the troops is a welcome addition. The Wiesel's extra small size will enable it to penetrate Philippine brush country deeper than any armored vehicle in its inventory.

Its a good vehicle to equip the country's first light mechanized battalion.

German 'Wiesel' AAV
AAV = Airportable Armored Vehicle

Recognition Features:

* Well sloped glacis plate with engine front left and driver right, TOW ATGW on pedestal mount over open horizontal roof at rear (other variants could have mortar or turrets equipped with machine guns, automatic cannons or AA(Stinger) Missiles)

* Hull sides slope inwards to above track guards with exhaust outlet on left side, horzontal louvers with exhaust pipe to immediate rear with gauze-type cover, right side of hull above tracks has spade

* Suspension each side has three large evenly spaced road wheels (Wiesel 2 Extended Base Vehicle for some variants has four road wheels each side), large idler rear, small drive sprocket front, one support roller above first and second road wheel (Wiesel 2 Extended Base Vehicle for some variants has two support rollers)

Specifications:

Crew: 3
Armament: 1 TOW ATGW launcher with 7 missiles or two man turret with 20 mm cannon with 160 rounds (other variants also available)

Length, hull: 3.31 meters (10'-10" *F.T.M.C.)

Width: 1.82 meters (6'-0" *F.T.M.C.)

Height, overall (TOW version): 1.897 meters (6'-3" *F.T.M.C.)

Weight, combat: 2,800 kg (6,160 lbs. (3.1 tons) *F.T.M.C.)

Max. road speed: 75 km/hr (47 mph *F.T.M.C.)
* F.T.M.C. = For The Metrically Challenged

Development/Layout:

The Wiesel airportable, light armored vehicle was developed for German Airborne units by Porsche but production is undertaken by MaK with the first of an initial order of 345 vehicles delivered in 1989. That initial order was for 210 TOW versions and 135 with the 20 mm cannon.

Porsche designed the Wiesel to be built with many commercially available automotive parts. The intention was that in the event of a war the Wiesel could pull into nearly any civilian automotive repair shop in Germany (and much of Europe) and be able to find many of the repair parts it would need.

Further development has resulted in the Wiesel 2 (Extended Base Vehicle). The Wiesel 2 has a longer hull and an additional road wheel.

In 1995 the German Army ordered an air defense version, called the 'Ozelot' (Ocelot) of the Wiesel 2 with four Stinger SAM in ready to launch position. 50 have been ordered (along with 10 platoon CPs and 7 battery CPs all on Wiesel 2 chassis). First production units are to be completed in 2000 with final deliveries in 2003. The 'Ozelot' can also fire SA-16 Gimlet (Igla 1) because Germany has a large stock of them left from the former East German Army.

Other variants that have been developed include a mortar carrier, HOT ATGW, recon vehicle with BTM 208 turret, air defense with Bofors RBS-70 SAM. The Wiesel is suitable for adaptation as a command and control vehicle, battlefield surveillance with radar, resupply vehicle, recovery, ambulance and APC.

The United States Army took delivery of a small number of Wiesels for trials.

Status:

In service with Germany.
U.S. Army purchased several.
Some Wiesels have served with UN forces.

Nice dream RT.

Beats riding a dilapidated Humvee or an open, unarmed truck any time.

In an ambush scenario, some Wiesels in the convoy might be disabled in the first volley but the others can immediately maneuver to engage and even chase retreating enemy owing to its agility and speed which is fast for a tracked vehicle.

Yup, very good vehicle, especially for our terrain.
Some of those Wiesel pics I haven't seen yet. Nice.

Two relatively simple fire support variants I'd like to see here:
1) turret w/ .50cal MG + 40mm AGL
2) 106mm recoilless rifle mount

It will need an RPG-resistant 'cage' (have the Germans tried this, or would the added weight be too much for the tiny Wiesel to bear?).

Plenty of RPGs in Afghanistan but the Germans arent using slat armor on their wheeled and tracked vehicles.

That Wiesel looks like a toy tank beside that Pandur APC.

I would like to buy one when that becomes surplus. 75kph in Metro Manila traffic is not bad. :drunk:

very low silhouette, very small target profile = difficult to hit than the Simba, V150, M113, etc - and most of all, its sophisticated target detection and acquisition enables the Wiesel to return fire with DEADLY ACCURACY day and night and in bad weather.

Nice machine indeed! Its like a small M113 but better designed in my opinion. Maybe we could make copies of it instead as the system seems simple enough. Just like our jitneys. As for protection against RPG attacks I'm sure there are add-on kits that can be used. Not to mention those Commie inventions that use active and passive defense systems.

Looks pretty darn impressive. Lug a 20mm or a 30mm gun and, voila!, instant, compact lead fire support vehicle. Can you train that cannon on slow, low flying helos? If not, then get some Stingers for a real low level SAM system. Put in a TOW system and you've got an instant anti-tank/fortification buster. Put a mortar for the indirect fire support mode. Add to that the simplicity of having one main platform for a mobile SAM system, mobile command platform, fire-support vehicle, etc. and you'd save a lot of money. Adding a little cage for RPG protection wouldn't be that hard too. And since it's pretty light, it wouldn't put a lot of strain on the engine, tranny, and the chassis. Mighty compact, mighty simple mighty effective...

Iron Dragon - January 31, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
The PA should really consider the Wiesel for future acquisition. This is one impressive vehicle - multiple configs, highly transportable and powerfully armed for its size.

Filipino crewmen would even be more more comfortable inside than the bigger Germans.

City Hunter - January 31, 2006 11:36 AM (GMT)
Definitely. The Wiesel concept is one which our AFP take into deep consideration. It would be better if we could produce one locally using local or easily available components.

The locally designed HumVee recently accepted into local military service points to the possiblilty of us developing armored vehicles of our own in the Wiesel class. My idea is that instead of pursuing this concept, the local HumVee, we should instead invest on a local Wiesel concept. For jeep requirements, we should look back a bit further and adopt a local production of the Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen for military and civilian use. History shows that it, the Kubelwagen, could match the 4wd capability of the Jeep. And its simpler mechanism means lower overall cost. Modding it a bit more, if applicable, modern technologies like those on the French Auverlands and even the HumVee.

caterwaul - January 31, 2006 11:50 AM (GMT)
a Wiesel-clone could be a more viable project than the Kalakian in conjunction with also developing a homegrown mine-resistant vehicle, medyo behind ata ang PA sa sariling sikap initiatives ng PMC ah

Gasmal - March 2, 2006 04:00 AM (GMT)
RP got Weisel?.. Personally it good for RP if they can buy Weisel in large quantity.
So for now i dont think RP need for MBT (Main Battle Tank) but it's enough to get Weisel around 150-300 unit. RP can use Weisel for Reccon, Anti-Tank & Anti Personal.
Mounted TOW or any Anti-Tank missile to Weisel. Since Weisel is a small & light tank, it's can use "shoot & scoot" doctrine.

:agree: we could develop a ligth mechanized regiment/brigade and airborne brigade using this versitile weapon system, hope that positive ang evaluation ng PA and AFP for this weapon. :armyLol:

Now this 'TANK' is what we should get! Just right for our terrain and existing military transport assets like the C130.

Can't resist to update this thread after reading this from start to finish.

Akimima, forget your MBT suggestions - this ought to be a priority acquisition of the PA, in all its variants preferably.

pilok2007 - February 4, 2007 03:32 PM (GMT)
kidding aside. this is a great cool ultralight tank!!!
if only we could copy that and mass produce it for the AFP. hmmmmm.
I think it fit our needs for the coin. I guess it will save us alot of gasoline too. hehehe :thumb:

akimima - February 5, 2007 09:03 PM (GMT)
very cute but dangerous equipment. wish I can afford to buy one for my son. But honestly I agree with with everyone that the Philippines can try and mass produce this if we can get a right to do so from Germany. I am guessing that maybe a brand new M113 would be equivalent to at least 2 or 3 of these cuties. I bet fieldign hundreds of these in the south would sure wreck havoc to the MILF and Abu Sayyaf.

:fire:

akimima - February 5, 2007 09:05 PM (GMT)
Holler,

Yup MBT is definitely out. With an MBT say an M1 Abrams, you can probobly get at 10 of these.
