14 soldiers killed as gunbattles rage in Jolo

As many as 14 soldiers were reported killed while 16 others were wounded in the continuing clash between government troopers and the combined forces of the Abu Sayyaf and former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members in Jolo on Tuesday.

The military has no report on how many gunmen loyal to jailed former MNLF leader Nur Misuari have been killed or wounded in the fighting in Panamao and other outlying towns.

The clashes erupted Monday when more than 500 of Misuari's men attacked soldiers after a disagreement over military operations against the Abu Sayyaf that affected their stronghold, the military said.

About 300 gunmen seized an Army company detachment in Panamao's Siit village, but government forces were able to retake it after hours of fighting, the military said.

Military rejects truce in Jolo battle

Fighting between Muslim rebels and government troops in Jolo continued for the third day on Wednesday as the military rejected a call for a cease-fire.

At least 20 soldiers have been killed and 38 wounded and an estimated 30 Muslim rebels have died and 37 wounded in the fighting, which began after a child was shot dead during a weekend military operation, officials said.

Muslim rebels fired mortar shells at a Marine camp in Patikul town, but most of the fighting centered in the coastal town of Panamao, where guerrillas engaged troops in a series of running skirmishes, officials in the area said.

Two OV-10 attack planes bombed rebel positions and a naval boat shelled the area. Civilian residents of Panamao were being evacuated from the area, said the officers.

“The situation is fluid as our troops continue to pursue these perpetrators,” said Lt. Gen. Edilberto Adan in Manila.

Adan said six battalions of troops were now in Jolo with a Marine battalion ready to join them.

Soldiers overrun suspected MNLF camp in Sulu

A major camp of a suspected breakaway faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) had been overrun by the military, five days into the raging clashes in Sulu, ANC reported Friday.

Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Efren Abu said the camp in Barangay Bitanag, Kalang-alang Kaluang had been seized by soldiers.

He added military operations continue to overrun other suspected rebel camps south of Sulu.

The AFP chief revealed the MNLF breakaway faction was able to recruit members prior to their attack against the military early this week by promising jobs and livelihood to residents, once former MNLF chief Nur Misuari is returned to Mindanao.

Misuari is currently detained at the Fort Santo Domingo in Laguna for alleged rebellion.

The military said it will continue its assault on MNLF breakaway faction in Sulu unless President Arroyo orders a cease-fire.

AFP Deputy Chief of Staff Ariston de los Reyes said military offensives will continue until the MNLF fighters are neutralized.

Mrs. Arroyo has left it to the military to determine until when its assault will continue, pointing out that the violence has been isolated in only two towns in Sulu.

Senators, meantime, said the government should act tough against enemies of the state, adding that the government should not agree to a cease-fire amid the clashes in Sulu.

Opposition Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile said the military should pursue the enemy until they surrender.

Sen. Rodolfo Biazon for his part added the government may be seen as weak if it agrees to a truce with the MNLF breakaway group.

another 3 soldiers killed by abu sayyaf

THREE soldiers were killed and one wounded in a clash on Saturday with suspected members of the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group on the strife-torn island of Jolo, a military task force commander said. The clash comes just days after about 2,000 soldiers overran the headquarters of Muslim rebel leader Habier Malik in Panamao town in Jolo following some 10 days of fighting which claimed the lives of 25 soldiers and some 70 to 100 of Malik's men.

Troops were securing a road in Indanan town in the southern island when they encountered the members of the Abu Sayyaf, a feared kidnapping and bombing gang, said Brigadier General Agustin Dema-ala. The Abu Sayyaf suffered an undetermined number of casualties, he added.

Dema-ala said the clash came as the military was re-positioning some of its forces from Panamao town, Malik's stronghold, to other parts of Jolo island where the Abu Sayyaf are based.

Malik, a respected religious leader and loyal follower of jailed Muslim rebel and politician Nur Misuari, mounted attacks on military outposts in Jolo on February 6.

He was backed by members of Misuari's old guerrilla group, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) but Abu Sayyaf fighters also took part in some of the fighting, the military has said.

Army division sent to hunt Janjalani

The Philippine Star 09/05/2005

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The military has unleashed a whole Army division in Central Mindanao with one mission in mind: wipe out Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani and his followers.

Armed Forces Southern Command (Southcom) chief Lt. Gen. Alberto Braganza, just six days away from retirement, has not softened his stance on neutralizing the local terrorists in order to stop bombings in the war-torn region, according to Col. Domingo Tutaan Jr., chief of the Southcom’s unified staff.

"The Southcom has dedicated a whole (Army) division to wipe out the Abu Sayyaf terrorists now hiding in Central Mindanao with suspected JI (Jemaah Islamiyah( cohorts," Tutaan told reporters.

But amid beefed-up efforts against the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf and their cohorts from the JI in the region, three Army soldiers were killed in an ambush yesterday in Sulu by suspected Abu Sayyaf men.

The attack, which occurred at the Karawan complex in Indanan, Sulu at around 6:30 a.m., was led by Abu Sayyaf leader Umbra Jumdail, according to anti-terror task force chief Brig. Gen. Alexander Aleo.

"The three soldiers were killed on the spot. Pursuit operations are ongoing and we will not stop until we get these terrorists," Aleo said.

Jumdail is one of the key leaders of the group wanted by the US and Philippine governments for a string of bombings and kidnappings in recent years. The Abu Sayyaf is on the US State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations.

The victims were identified as Lt. Sahiron Gumampang, Pfcs. Hasan Darib and Arnold Baldorado — all members of the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion.

Army spokesman Maj. Bartolome Vincent Bacarro said the soldiers were unarmed and were in civilian clothes as they were about to attend the 7 a.m. Muslim mass in Indanan.

The military had been belittling the Abu Sayyaf, calling it a spent force due to the number of arrests made against its leaders and members recently.

Military forces claimed to have so far eliminated 14 Abu Sayyaf members since the 6th Army Division under Maj. Gen. Agustin Dema-ala launched an offensive against them on July 1 after the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front collaborated in ejecting the terrorists from Mindanao.

According to Braganza, the battalions of Army men based in several towns in Maguindanao province under the 6th Division have been trapping more of the elusive terrorists.

Braganza also appealed to the public to stay alert as the Abu Sayyaf may attempt to carry out diversionary attacks.

"These threats are real and we are calling on the people to keep their vigilance," Braganza said.

Meanwhile, two suspected members of the communist New People’s Army were arrested Saturday night in Barangay Beguin in Bulan, Sorsogon shortly after an encounter with government forces.

Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo showed the arrested suspects were identified as Noli Gegantoca, alias Lino, and Julie Gulimlim, alias Maan. Their five companions managed to escape. — Roel Pareño, Cecille Suerte-Felipe, AFP

Army officer, 2 troopers slain in Agusan Sur clash
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO

SAN LUIS, Agusan del Sur - The New People’s Army (NPA) staged a daring landmine attack on patrolling government soldiers Sunday, killing an Army officer and two other soldiers and wounding five other troopers at Sitio Mantuganoy, Barangay Dimasalang, this town.

The slain military men were identified as Lt. Onyx Adducul, Privates First Class (PFCs) Abdulracer Abdukrajak and Hector Adan, all of 29th Infantry Battalion assigned in the river towns of Agusan del Sur.

Wounded were PFCs Danny I. Anquillano, Judy P. Popera, Roy H. Mandi, Joak D. Badun, and Joralous C. Inday. They were immediately evacuated to Camp Evangelista Hospital Annex at Bancasi, Butuan City.

They were later declared out of danger by physicians.

Most of the slain and wounded government soldiers were hit by landmines.

Initial field reports stated that elements of the 29th IB were responding to call of villagers about the presence of heavily armed NPA rebels in Mantuganoy who were allegedly collecting "revolutionary taxes."

However, members of the responding team stumbled on a planted landmine while they were negotiating the road in Mantuganoy at 4:45 in the morning.

The team leader, Adducul, and his two soldiers were hit by the blast and killed on the spot.

Patrolling troops fought back for more than 10 minutes against the NPA rebels who reportedly positioned themselves at a hilly portion.

"The village folk reported to our pursuing troops that at least eight seriously wounded NPA rebels were dragged along by their fleeing comrades," said Lt. Col. Francisco I. Simbajon, regional Army spokesman.

Field reports also stated that the group that planted the landmines on Mantuganoy road were members of Front Committee 8 of the CPP-NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC).

The rebels fled towards Dimasalang, the field reports also stated.

Rebels, soldiers killed in clash

By MIKE GUIMBATAN Jr. and FREDDIE C. VELEZ

CAMP AQUINO, Tarlac City — Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and two soldiers were killed while several others were wounded in an encounter in Barangay San Jose, Calumpit, Bulacan yesterday.

Initial reports reaching Northern Luzon Command Chief Lt. Gen. Bonifacio Ramos said three soldiers, identified only by their ranks and surnames, were also wounded in the clash: 1Lt. Pedrigo, Sgt. Abillo and Sgt. Tangonan. All were evacuated to the Bulacan Provincial Hospital.

Subsequent reports however said that  only Sgt. Tangonan survived. He was evacuated to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center in V. Luna, Quezon City .

The soldiers, according to an Army statement, were tipped by concerned residents about the harassment and extortion activities of the communist rebels led by Delfin de Guzman aka "Baste", the secretary of Bulacan NPA.

Two days prior to the encounter, De Guzman and his men had been spotted in Barangay San Jose. Intelligence reports said the rebels were in the barangay to hide the firearms they seized in a raid in Binuangan, Hagonoy last April 21.

The villagers, fearing that the presence of the rebels would endanger their lives, informed authorities about the massing NPA members in their area.

Combined elements of the 18th Special Forces Company, 3rd  Infantry Battalion under Lt. Col. Gerry Velez, and 3rd Military Intelligence Group, ISAFP all of the 703rd Infantry Brigade under Colonel Rommel Gomez, caught up with the rebels at around 5:30 a.m. in San Jose.

Ramos ordered 7th Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Juanito P. Gomez to supervise the ongoing pursuit operation and to ensure that no civilians will be caught in the crossfire between the soldiers and the insurgents.

ILAGAN, Isabela — A soldier and four other persons, believed to be communist rebels, died in an encounter in San Guillermo, Isabela early Saturday morning, a belated Army report stated.

It was reported that troops of the Army’s 52nd Reconnaissance Company were on patrol in a remote village in San Guillermo at the foot of the northern Sierra Madre ranges when they spotted a group of NPA rebels.

This sparked an exchange of fire between the soldiers and the rebels believed to be members of CPP-NPA-NDF’s Cagayan Valley Benito Tesorio command .

Col. Fernando Pasion of the Army’s 5th Infantry Division (ID) based in Camp Melchor dela Cruz, Gamu, Isabela said Private First-Class Lappay of Angadanan town was killed in the enounter, while two other soldiers -- one Lietenant Quirog and one PFC Logao – were wounded.

The rebels had four casualties, Pasion said, noting reports by residents of the place.

But the rebels have not confirmed any casualty in the encounter.

Army officer gunned down in Sorsogon
By Celso Amo And James Mananghaya
The Philippine Star 11/29/2006

LEGAZPI CITY – A New People’s Army hit man shot dead an Army captain while conducting surveillance inside a cockpit in Irosin town in Sorsogon Monday evening, police said.

Senior Superintendent Joel Regondola, Sorsogon police director, identified the victim as Captain Patrick Baeza, 34, assigned as an intelligence officer at the 901st Infantry Brigade based in Barangay Villahermosa in Daraga town, Albay.

Baeza is a resident of Barangay San Pedro in Irosin town and a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy, Class 95.

Report said that the victim was conducting follow-up operations inside the cockpit while a derby was going on in Barangay San Isidro about 500 meters from the town proper at about 7:45 p.m. Monday.

But while inside, an NPA assassin suddenly fired a cal. 45 pistol point blank at the back of the head of the Army captain, killing him on the spot.

The shooting incident forced some of the derby aficionados to drop to the ground and scamper outside for safety.

"Parang na-surveillance siya ng kalaban kasi tagaroon siya. (The rebels in the area know him already because he comes from the place)," said Col. Roberto Morales, deputy brigade commander of the 901st Infantry Brigade.

Others theorized that Baeza prevailed upon his father not to give in to the extortion activities of the NPA operating in the barangay where his family lives.

The body was brought to the Irosin District Hospital for autopsy.
