Title: The MX-1 Kalakian

Kampilan - August 17, 2004 07:41 AM (GMT)
Any latest news on the Kalakian APC?

wingblast - August 20, 2004 11:19 AM (GMT)
if im not mistaken, there are no Kalakian APCs in active service yet.

HolyDog - August 21, 2004 11:44 AM (GMT)
Suggestion for the Kalakian:

Install a remote turret like the Arrows instead of manned turret - safer for the crew

But thats a puny gun, a Bushmaster 25mm with AGL is a better combination.

Not only the Kalakian but M113s too.

Another potential turret for the Kalakian is the Kliver gun/missile combat module. The image below shows a 30mm 2A72 autocannon, a coaxial PKT machine gun, and 4 Kornet laser-guided ATGMs. Now, thats firepower in a modular package! :rifle:

Dancing Fire - September 5, 2004 09:21 AM (GMT)
and to make the Kalakian RPG-proof, lets make em like the Strykers or this Polish BRDM-2 Chacal

destroyerman - September 5, 2004 11:26 AM (GMT)
ack, looks like somebody just caught an apc and put it in a cage :armytwisted:

ugly...

Pendejo - September 5, 2004 12:29 PM (GMT)
I've seen houses like that here in B.F. Homes. :specool:

mission (fuga) - September 5, 2004 02:19 PM (GMT)
umm... whats with the bird cage? another type of armor supplement??? :specool:

bigbolz - September 5, 2004 11:34 PM (GMT)
joking aside, is that type of enclosure really effective in stopping rpg hits?

are there reports detailing its effectiveness coz' it seems everyone is riding on the bird cage bandwagon... :demon:

Numbers - September 6, 2004 09:52 AM (GMT)
A Stryker operating in Mosul was hit by an RPG which struck the 'bird cage' , the detonation ignited the gas cans but the warhead itself failed to penetrate the Stryker's hull.

theoretically, very high probability that it is effective... as the warhead will detonate as soon as it hits the cage as opposed to the armour

as proven by this reply from Rallion... :thumb:

Cages are cost-effective anti-armour as RPG's are prevalent among armies since they are proven to be powerful, effective weapons for something so crude (by 21th century standards) and cheap... I suppose you can just add more laminated armour or ERA but they are always expensive and adds a lot of extra weight, hence decrease moblity, range etc.... well you could use sandbags but then, it has to be what??? three feet thick??

Cages are not really new .. I remember reading books on WW2 that shows German half-trucks and armoured cars with wire cages.. although their idea is to prevent hand grenades from being thrown inside the cab...

Impressive turret - 100mm gun with 30mm autocannon plus 7.62mm machine gun. I'd say its quite comprehensive fire coverage.

Halifax Green - September 18, 2004 03:00 AM (GMT)
Not the Kalakian but cool turret set-up

galeng bro Kamp, ngayon lang ako nakakita ng crew na naka lifevest :thumb:

versatile talaga ang m113, kund di lang tayo kapos sa pera ok na sana imodify ang mga m113 natin...

Tormentor - September 26, 2004 05:54 AM (GMT)
That Kvaerner Eureka TOW turret is just right for our M113s or the Kalakian. TOWs are versatile weapons, not just in the AT role but effective against bunkers, gun emplacements, buildings, etc.

FrodoFrog - September 26, 2004 07:22 AM (GMT)
tsalap ng 113 nila tulo laway ko

Another turret suggestion for the Kalakian -- Rafael remote controlled turret:

:dunno: RCWS turrets incl subsystems/munitions probably cost more than the Kalakian platform itself.

any development regarding the development of the Kalakian and the order for several Kalakians that was placed by the Army? :dunno:

valiant - July 20, 2006 01:02 PM (GMT)
Now adays, it would be cheaper to procure improved wheeled APCs from Poland rather than investing on the Kalakian.

Frenzy - July 20, 2006 01:22 PM (GMT)
compare the Kalakian to this BRDM, its almost the same:

Eh kaso mukhang in abandon yata itong Kalakian project instead tinuloy na lang ang SIMBA ... tsk tsk ..

Ano ba problema sa Kalakian? di ba eto nga ang improve version ng SIMBA?

Sayang kasi sa tingin ko mas maraming kayang gawin itong Kalakian kesa sa SIMBA, na improve lang ng husto ... SYANG talaga ... basta gawa or disenyong Pinoy ... wala tayong tiwala ... anong klaseng mentalidad kaya yan ... Aasenso kaya tayo nyan?

jammerjamesky - July 20, 2006 11:40 PM (GMT)
if the KALAKIAN Project has no life in AFP may be the manufacturer can sell them to the security agency's.

gemini1 - July 21, 2006 04:52 AM (GMT)
Security agencies cannot afford the Kalakian apc, a lot of security agency cannot even afford to arm their guards with pistols that fire. A security agency near where i live was giving their guard a 22 magnum revolver and the guard said "sir batuta na lang po bigay nyo, mitsa lang ng buhay ko yan magnum, hindi naman pumuputok" :lollol:

:snipemo: saan ba mas mura bibili sa ibang bansa o gagawa ng sarili? baka naging mahal dahil maraming humingi ng lagay. Suggestion to the AFP for fire support and tank destroyer gun for our APC is the one use by Israel and the Chilean Army the 60mm HVMS gun. ( High Velocity kinetic medium support ) it can penetrate some armour .

israeli - October 11, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
guys, sorry for being too morbid...

should we now declare the Kalakian "dead"? :armycry: :headbang:

xyz - October 13, 2006 10:57 PM (GMT)
I thought the Kalakian was doing well... lack of support ba?

Zero wing - October 17, 2006 10:56 AM (GMT)
i see what a waste of money and time well thats the govt for you always wasting time

sa state of our system, i think it is now cheaper to buy equipment/vehicles from abroad rather than make it here. why? because there is not even a small support from our government for the kalakian to push-through... what more on other projects like our comrades suggestion on the F-20, trimaran-type ships, and other projects to make do better for our armed forces?

... sad to say but this is true. unlike during marcos' time there is/are efforts for such projects (i'm not a marcos supporter but if we compare him with our present gov't we are in a very sorry state today, much on our armed forces).

flipzi - October 21, 2006 05:43 AM (GMT)
That's the sad thing about our government. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SHORTSIGHTED!

THE AFP'S MODERNIZATION PROGRAM CAN BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR FILIPINO DEFENSE CONTRACTORS.

We can build our own APCs to suit the needs ot the Army, Marine's, bases defense, police units like the SWATs and SAFs. WE CAN EVEN EXPORT THESE.

Other items like patrol boats are good opportunities for exports. But i guess, our leaders are really this shortsighted.

The Kalakian project should push through along with the development of patrol boats.

Trojan - October 21, 2006 04:18 PM (GMT)
Whenever a Filipino defense contractor develops a product, they should also eye the needs of potential export customers. All of know the sad state of defense funding in the Philippines and, as a result, any product developed specifically for the AFP's needs will have a very small market at best. Do you see any t-610 Calis flying around? Is there a market for a revamped F-20 fighter jet beyond the Philippines? These are details that need to be addressed because the development of military equipment is highly capital intensive and the costs can only be recouped through economies of scale.

flipzi - October 22, 2006 04:57 AM (GMT)
If we can only have a President who's smart and good enough to MAXIMIZE the utilization of such opportunities, i believe the AFP modernization will open a floodgate of opportunities for local defense equipment developers, which can hit the export market as well.
