teknogeek - August 27, 2004 01:52 AM (GMT)

Banahaw - August 27, 2004 12:59 PM (GMT)

Another one
Maj. Gen. Edwin Vargas, deputy chief of staff for civil-military operations (FEU-ROTC)

On the average, PMA produces about 85 officers for the army annually. Other sources (ROTC, OCS) produce the balance which is about 88 in 2002.
That makes it almost 50/50.

The National ROTC Alumni Association (NRAA) claims that ROTC graduates comprise 70% of the AFP officer corps
The Philippine Army Modernization and Strategic Studies Office reported that the bulk of officers that join the officer corps normally came from ROTC. However since 1995, only 30% of new officers were products of ROTC; the majority came from the Philippine Military Academy.

That would be about it. How many officers does PMA produce a year anyway? About 200? During our time, less than 200 lang.

pero mas madami pa din ang products ng NOQC, OCS, OCC, PAFOCS than what PMA produce.. :agree:

Well there are some that are aloof or arrogant seeming especially in the special ops units where a certain degree of gunghoism or type A drive is a requirement... :demon:

Does anyone here have retired Adm Victorino Hingco's details? (e.g., school, etc.). I'd like to prepare his former unit's "prominent alumni" page as I've done for the following:
De La Salle University
Far Eastern University
Silliman University
University of Santo Tomas
University of the Philippines

Can you verify if Admiral Hingco is a product of the Iloilo Maritime Academy. I heard this at the Navy Golf Club today.

we should remove the PMA-First Policy. This is a direct contradiction to the military virtue of integrity. Look at the United States Armed Forces. Most of their top brass are ROTC graduates. Many officers were once enlisted personnel. Are we a democracy or not? To hell with elitism! :snipemo:

It would help your cause if you could substantiate your opinions with a little fact or even just a little bit of logic. Many of us in this forum have been trying to bridge this PMA-ROTC chasm for months now. Then here you come, a noob, with more than 100 postings in just a week, obviously you have not bothered reading the earlier parts of the thread and related postings.
This is not a pissing contest between PMA and non-PMA.
Let's hear some argument behind your claim on the so called PMA-First Policy. There might be some sense after all.

Non USMA graduates have a slim majority. The fact that Colin Powell's ascent to Chairman of the JCS was considered big news indicates that its still not that common for ROTC graduates to go that far.
I extended my commissionship research to non-Philippine fora, and I got the following data from an Active Duty warrant officer on Military.com. He grabbed the following information from the General Officer Management home page.
Generals (4 star):
ROTC: 6
USMA: 2
OCS: 3
LT Generals (3 star):
ROTC: 18
USMA: 16
OCS: 8
DA: 1

Come up with facts to back up your claim. You side stepped the challenge in your thread, so I'm reposting it here.
| QUOTE (adroth) |
As it is with any organization, military or civilian, upper management positions (be it the postion of VP, or in the case of the military BGEN and up) are all about trust. Its as much about how well a particular person will be able to work with his fellow VP / BGENs as it is about personal ability. The CEO / President has to have a working team, and chemistry between his management team is important.
The question of whether or not skills / achievements are duly recognized is more relevant at the lower levels. If there is, in fact, any discrimination it will manifest itself in the availability of training opportunities, e.g., foreign / civilian schooling, etc., and posting opportunities.
Unless you can come up with specific examples at that level, then this discussion is mute, and simply boils down to "your word against mine". |

Sir Adroth:
Regarding prominent UP ROTC alumni, you forgot to add ex-Defense Secretary Macario Peralta who served during the term of GMA's dad, the late and former President Diosdado Macapagal.
Dubbed by UP students of his time as the "Chocolate Soldier", but had appended to his nickname, "who is now a real soldier" when commissioned, he was among the "greats of the guerrilla resistance movement" during World War 2.
He was BTW also a bar topnotcher. So, who says ROTC products are inferior to PMAyers?
I request that his name be added to the roster you have created.
Mabuhay ka.
