Muslim guerrillas on a violent southern island have fatally shot four Philippine marines in separate attacks over two days, a military spokesman said Tuesday.
Capt. Jose Richie Pabilonia, spokesman for the military's Southern Command, said militants from the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group on Jolo island took advantage of a six-day suspension of military operations during a visit of a team from the Organization of the Islamic Conference to gun down the four marines.

In the first attack on Sunday, the victim was jogging at Jolo airport when a lone gunman shot him. Another marine was killed in downtown Jolo town, and two others were fatally shot on the same day, Pabilonia said.

U.S.-backed Philippine military offensives have whittled down the Abu Sayyaf's strength on Jolo from more than 1,000 rebels in early 2000 to about 400, but the rebels remain active. U.S. troops have undertaken civic projects for months on Jolo, including dental treatment and school and road construction, and have trained Filipino soldiers battling Abu Sayyaf militants in other southern provinces.

Residents of Jolo and neighboring provinces have suffered many attacks by the Abu Sayyaf, a small but brutal group linked to the al-Qaida network and notorious for deadly bombings, beheadings, kidnappings and other attacks.

Four Marines killed in clash with Abu Sayyaf

Four members of the Philippine Marines died and 13 others were wounded following an encounter with suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan on Tuesday.

Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan, Marine spokesman, said a patrol clashed with the bandits in a remote area. He quoted an initial report as saying that three soldiers died and 13 were wounded in the clash.

He added that a still undetermined number of bandits died or were wounded in the firefight.

The Marines were checking on reports that Giancarlo Bossi, an Italian priest kidnapped in Zamboanga Sibugay province last month, may have been taken to Basilan, an Abu Sayyaf stronghold.

There has been no word on the whereabouts of the priest since he was taken away by armed men after saying Sunday Mass at a church on June 10.

The Abu Sayyaf is the smallest but deadliest of several Muslim groups fighting the Philippine government.

Is eleven beheaded corpses worth the peace accord?

Ang gawin nila, ipadala nila ang mga tao na nag pugot ng ulo sa nearest MBLT then maybe there will be some form of social justice. Then baka pwede pa i salvage ang peace accord.

Crossing a commanders axis make all bets are off, truce or no truce, it is an invitation for a fight dahil once you intend to cross an axis you intend to envelop.

MILF have all the evil intent kahit paano pa balibaliktarin. ITS A FREAKIN AMBUSH PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

This is an example how political stupidity cost lives on the ground. Lets stop pretending, the ABU SAYAF is the spec ops arm of the MILF. At yan ang opinyon ng mga kawal.

whew, tsk tsk tsk rest in peace marines... :salute:

ayan ang napapala ng bansang kurap at pinapabayaan ang ating mga sundalo... kung meron sana tayong mga cobra gunships or alike with a precision weapon systems, within minutes in nine hours of fighting that it could have been deployed right away for a close-combat reinforcement mission... kaya lang wala eh hanggang panaginip nalang tayo... tsk tsk tsk... malas talaga... :armysad:

tama ka bok, it was pure and simple premeditated ambush! armor-led pa nga yung convoy so plinano talaga ang trap.

tama na yang ceasefire na yan...the MI and AS are just making fools of the government at the expense of the soldiers!

israeli - July 11, 2007 01:48 PM (GMT)
the GRP should withdraw from peace talks with the MILF in line with this latest incident. we must have an all-out war with these bastards, the same people who kidnapped the priest and are in cahoots with Jemaah Islamiyah (we have all been looking at the ASG as the one having links with JI when in fact the MILF too has links with the JI).

Redj - July 11, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
Correct. MILF will say lawless elements but when the AFP attacks these lawless elements they will say they are MILF?

So WTF are they talking??? Enough said let's give them sh--!!!

Tormentor - July 11, 2007 10:37 PM (GMT)
In the exclusive video footage taken by GMA reporter embedded with the Marines and shown just this morning, it was obvious that the troops let down their guards, probably believing that the MI will not attack them. There was no proper combat patrol formation, troops were relaxed on the way back to base after they failed to find Fr. Bossi.

:headbang:

The lack of vehicles is very obvious, The Marines also used borrowed a civilian Daewoo truck which promptly stuck in the mud!

The V150 proved useful as most of the wounded were evacuated using this single APC and the M35 trucks were death traps. Kaya AFP - i deploy nyo na ang Barako! anything armored is better than civilian trucks!

I saw this too!

It was very frustrating and so pitiful to see pinned down Marines still fighting gallantly while their mortar team fired dud after dud mortar rounds!

Naunahan talaga yung spearhead.

The video footage was limited to the immediate area surrounding the APC, most were shots of the squad protecting the armored vehicle. Yes, the fiasco with the dud mortar rounds was comically tragic but according to my source, the troops were able to take down the enemy anti-armor team before it could fire an RPG at the APC. Kudos too to the female commander of the APC for holding her ground and waiting for the wounded to load up.

RIP to KIAs and speedy recovery to the WIAs. :salute:

The DND and presidency's lack of foresight and the "wrong inputs" she got from her incompetent military advisers are putting the lives of the soldiers in great danger.

11 Marines, ambushed despite a ceasefire, beheaded, their penis cut off, ..... rebel forces destroyed two M35 military trucks and captured another during the fighting ..... MILF fighters have also recovered five M-60 machine guns, one submachine gun, five M-203 automatic rifles, two M-14 rifles with sniper scopes, a pair of night vision goggles, and two radio transceivers..

Wow, these military advisers should be blamed for this fiasco. Kaya ayan. Madami nakakatay sa sundalo.

and there was only ONE amored vehicle in that ill-fated convoy while there are several in the PMRF motorpool in NCR in their flashy and useless urban camo (Berlin Brigade copycat wannabes) that should have been more useful in Basilan!

What is startling is the way the MILF is reacting. They are claiming responsibility for the attack and not attributing it to "lost commands" so to speak.

Trying perhaps to gain leverage in their negotiations with the GRP? I hope not. If so they are greatly mistaken.

Leson to be learned. MILF/ABU Sayaff are traitors and cannot be trusted. Peace negotiations with this terrorist are useless.

As long they(MILF/ABU SAYAFF) can hit hard AFP soldiers, they will continue to do so no matter what kind of peace offering to them.

It is also time for our officials to think properly what kind of modernization program needed for our AFP.

Cheers :armycheers:

A Philippine Air Force UH-1H Huey helicopter prepares to take off Wednesday July 11, 2007 from Basilan with the bodies of fourteen Philippine Marines killed Tuesday in a clash with Muslim insurgents while searching for a kidnapped Italian priest in southern Philippines. Troops recovered the bodies of 14 marines, ten of them beheaded, in one of the bloodiest fights this year, which erupted Tuesday in Tipo Tipo town on southern Basilan island, said Philippine Marines spokesman Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan. The military said at least 300 al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf militants, joined by "lawless groups," ambushed the heavily outnumbered marines

Philippine Marines carry into a helicopter the remains of a killed soldier at a school field in Lamitan town of Basilan province, southern Philippines 11 July 2007. Fourteen marines were killed, 10 of them beheaded, in a fight with Muslim militants in the southern Philippines, according to military officials. Brigadier General Ramiro Alivio, marine brigade commander in Basilan said the attackers included members of the Abu Sayyaf rebel group and the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The marines, numbering about 50, had encountered around 300 Muslim rebels while on an operation to verify reports that abducted Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi was being held in the province. Have yet to see the footage or get to read a newsbit about the incident. Ask ko lang, ano na nangyari sa RPG cage project or something that I saw posted here? Yun local copy to protect our armored assets like those used by the US forces sa Iraq. Shouldn't that have been deployed already? If letting their gaurd down due to the ceasefire ang cause dapat rin major retraining. Anyway, dapat naman walang mga rebelde talaga. How can the government be taken serious kung pinapayagan mga armed goons to occupy an area. Tapos legitimate and responsible gun owners pinahihirapan at kinakwartahan pa.

Spidey - July 13, 2007 12:19 AM (GMT)
Is it true that GMA ordered the Marines to retaliate against the MILF in the area but its the Marines who declined?

Why? I don't they're scared. For what reasons?
