During the late '70s and early '80s, one of those using the UP Campus for military training in addition to the UP ROTC and AFP Rainbow Rangers was the YADO (Youth Action Development Organization). Founded by Colonel Alexander Villalon who was once an activist himself. They claim their unit is under the Office of the President.
I remember, like the Rainbow, they recruit students to join their group as replacement for the traditional ROTC/CMT. Here students were allowed to have the "gupit binata" haircuts with lower BDUs and their YADO T-shirts and black ballcaps as uniform. Their cadres wore maroon woodland pattern camou BDUs and black berets. They were also readily mobilized during occassions as well as conduct relief operations. Their HQ was opposite the UP ROTC/AFP Rainbow HQ.
Considered a rival faction then with the RR, pissing contest between the groups along the UP Campus sometimes turns into a violent rock throwing incident.
Last time I've heard of the unit was when it supported the campaign of its founder when he run for public office.
Any cadres or former members out there to give more details?
:armycheers: Yeah... also, not so many but there are members of the YADO who joined the Rainbow, want to hear their stories. The Rainbow and YADO conducted ROTC remedial trainings during summer, there are many funny stories here. They say, a large percentage of the elements of the YADO come from rich families, can anybody comment on this. There were also Rumors then, that Cadres of the YADO contribute certain amounts to the organization.
hehehe I remember on our summer camp those YADO guys were sporting long hairs, you know the gupit binata type while we at Rainbow was almost kalbo, but when our FTX was almost over, those YADO guys were shaven balds-skin heads hindi daw sila ga-graduate unless pa-gupit sila military style :lollol:

Probably true. I remember they have their own radio group. Even saw a pick-up with the YADO logo. Maybe members also of civic organizations doing ROTC thru their system ever willing to donate for a cause.
