Police hunt rob gang in Intramuros shooting

Agents of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Task Force Maverick have launched a manhunt for the three remaining members of a robbery gang led by former military men following the killing of two of their cohorts and the arrest of five others in a foiled robbery on a brokerage firm in Intramuros, Manila last Thursday.

A policeman – identified as PO3 Michael Buenaventura of Task Force Maverick – was killed during the followup operation conducted by the police in Barangay Palatiw, Pasig City later in the afternoon. PNP spokesman Senior Supt. Samuel Pagdilao said the PNP leadership will likely accord a hero’s burial for Buenaventura who was killed in the line of duty.

In his report to PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief Director Jesus Verzosa, Task Force Maverick Senior Supt. Allen Bantolo said they have filed charges of robbery in band, homicide and illegal possession of firearms against the five arrested suspects.

Among those charged were Edwin Saavedra of 205 Damayanglagi, Quezon City; Buenaventura Almeda of Barangay Taliwag, Caruncho Ave., Pasig City; Allan Huanico of de los Santos St., Araneta, Quezon City; Reynante Agquiz of Purok 6, Barangay Cupang, Muntinlupa City; and Rodney Santos of Caliwag St., Pasig City.

Police presented as evidence against the suspects a Glock .45 caliber pistol, a homemade .38 caliber revolver, a Smith & Wesson caliber .38 revolver, a 9mm Feg pistol, two caliber .45 Norinco pistols, four cellular phones and several military identification cards that were allegedly seized from the slain and arrested gang members.

According to Bantolo, the Task Force Maverick operatives received information that members of the Bulawin robbery gang would stage a holdup at the Certified Brokerage Corporation in Intramuros, prompting him to deploy police agents in the area.

While conducting surveillance operations, Task Force Maverick along with other police teams – CIDG Special Reaction Unit and Crisis Response Group-Special Action Force (CRG-SAF) – heard a gunshot, prompting them to proceed to the brokerage office where they were met with gunfire by the suspects.

Two employees of the brokerage firm – Perservando Calibo and Alberto Sarmiento – were wounded in the incident, reports said.

However, the police agents cornered the five other cohorts who were armed with handguns along Padre Burgos street.

During the commotion, the gang leaders – identified as SN1 Rolando Bulawin and Pfc. Ruben Aquino, who is reportedly on AWOL status – and two others managed to escape from the scene when they commandeered a taxi cab.

Their whereabouts were later traced through information provided by their five arrested cohorts and text messages, Bantolo added.

At 2:45 p.m., the Task Force Maverick elements spotted Bulawin’s group along Market Avenue in Barangay Palatiw but were immediately fired upon by the suspects.

Bulawin, Aquino and PO3 Buenaventura were killed in the shootout while PO2 Antolin Gerolia of the CIDG-SRU was wounded in the incident.

Verzosa said Oplan Armagedon was launched early this year to neutralize the members of the Bulawin Robbery Gang that has been involved in at least two botched hold up incidents on a travel agency and another business establishment in Intramuros, Manila.

So this wasn't a chance encounter after-all. This was their mission on that group itself.

Here we are again, the advance posting of the operatives on the suppose venue of the robbery was quite erroneous. Their was no adequate surveillance and casing on the area so that proper posting could prevent the "caught unaware" situation that resulted to them being fired upon first by the suspects.

Sometimes lapses in the execution of the operation may result to unnecessary casualties on the operatives side even though the intelligence feeding was so accurate.
