Razon promotes cop in shootout with thieves

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

He had survived for the fourth time but Senior Police Officer 4 Antonio Espadero of the Manila Police District is willing to risk his life anytime to protect the citizenry he vowed to serve.

The courage of Espadero of the MPD Station 3 was not left unnoticed as Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. ordered the spot promotion to one rank higher – police inspector. Aside from the spot promotion, Razon also said that the PNP will shoulder the hospital expenses of SPO4 Antonio Espadero who was shot and wounded by three robbers whom he accosted in Quiapo, Manila on Feb. 8.

Espadero was shot three times in the mouth by one of the robbers but miraculously the bullets merely stuck in his tongue and did not inflict serious damage. He was also shot in the body.

Razon vowed to personally coordinate with the National Police Commission (Napolcom) for Espadero’s promotion. Napolcom is the government agency in-charge of the promotion of police officers.

Espadero was on his way to work on board a public utility vehicle at around 7:30 p.m. when he spotted an apparent robbery incident in an FX taxi. He alighted from the PUV and accosted the holdup men. But one of the robbers suddenly approached Espadero, poked a .45 caliber pistol on his mouth and fired three shots. Although wounded, Espadero managed to pull out his service firearm and shot one of the robbers in the head and died on the spot.

The other robbers shot Espadero at the back but the bullet exited and miraculously did not inflict serious damage. The two other robbers managed to escape.

The Feb. 8 incident was the fourth time near-death encounter of Espadero. He said the first was in 1995 when he passed by a robbery incident in a Kowloon store also in Manila. He was also wounded but eventually recovered from the incident.

Espadero, who has been in the police service for 24 years, said his faith to the Lord and his belief to the Lord of Pardon was his secret weapon in surviving all the near-deadly encounters. He showed to Razon his Lord of Pardon prayer booklet when he was given award during the Talakayan sa Isyu ng Pulis (TSIP), a weekly forum sponsored by the PNP.

The courageous policemen still had the stitches in his tongue which he showed to media during interview.

Aside from being a devotee of the Lord of Pardon, Espadero credited his prayerful wife for his fortune to survive encounter with criminals. “Lagi po nya akong ipinagdadasal,” Espadero said of his wife. Espadero was with his wife Shirley and children Vanessa and Ericson.

Razon also announced that the PNP will reimburse all the hospital expenses of Espadero, and other monetary benefits for policemen who risked their lives and limbs during their tours of duty. – Cecille Suerte Felipe

Elderly man helps pay for heroic cop’s hospital bill

By NESTOR ETOLLE
The Philippine Star

A senior citizen gave P5,000 to help pay for the medical expenses of a policeman who almost lost his life fighting three robbers who held up a taxi driver in Quiapo, Manila two weeks ago.

Arthur Precilla went to Manila police headquarters and handed the amount to Manila Police District director (MPD) Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales after reading about the exploits of Senior Police Officer 4 Antonio Espadero in the other day’s issue of The STAR.

Precilla told Rosales he was overwhelmed by the bravery of Espadero, who risked his own life to respond to a call of duty.

"For me he (Espadero) is the real hero of our time," Precilla said, showing Rosales his senior citizen’s card. "A policeman like Espadero should be emulated by other law enforcers."

Rosales said Espadero will be honored in Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at Manila police headquarters. He invited Precilla to witness the event and personally hand his financial assistance to Espadero during the ceremony.

Rosales said the Manila police is getting rid of scalawags within its ranks.

"I give credit to the men and women of the MPD who have shown exceptional accomplishment in the performance of their duties," he said.

Philippine National Police chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. has ordered Espadero promoted to the rank of inspector upon hearing of his exploits.

Sta. Cruz police station chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula said it was the fourth time Espadero, who is under his command, figured in a near-death encounter.

Espadero was always in the "right place at the right time," he said.

Rookie cop takes on 5 robbers: 1 dead, 1 arrested
By Nestor Etolle
Thursday, May 29, 2008

A rookie policeman single-handedly fought off five armed jeepney robbers in Binondo, Manila Tuesday night, killing one suspect and arresting another.

Police Officer 2 Dionisio Dimazana is one of several policemen on foot patrol tasked by Meisic police station chief Superintendent Nelson Yabut to conduct surveillance and monitoring of the C.M. Recto street in Binondo due to reported rampant robberies.

While doing his rounds, Dimazana reportedly noticed a group of five men alight from a Divisoria-bound passenger jeepney at the corner of Camba street as the passengers shouted for help. Dimazana chased the fleeing suspects, but one of the men fired at him but missed. Dimazana returned fire and hit the one who shot at him, while another suspect surrendered when the lawman trained his gun at him. Three others managed to escape.

Responding policemen rushed the wounded suspect to the Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center but he died while undergoing treatment. He was identified as Raymond Jarabo, 25, an alleged Batang City Jail gang member. Police said they recovered a pen gun from Jarabo’s possession. A paper bag containing the suspects’ loot – a cellular phone, a jacket and P400 – was also recovered.

The arrested suspect was identified as Joel Catala, 25, also an alleged member of the Batang City Jail gang. A fan knife was recovered from him, according to police. Catala also mentioned the names of their companions during interrogation.

At the police station, four of the victims identified Catala as one of the five men who held them up. Seaman Edelito Villador, 32, also identified the recovered items as his personal belongings. The victims said the suspects used a gun and knives in robbing them.

Yabut commended Dimazana for his prompt response to the crime, which led to the neutralization of a notorious robbery gang operating in Binondo. A follow-up team of operatives is conducting a manhunt for the rest of the suspects.

Mandaluyong cop kills 3 rob suspects
By Non Alquitran
Thursday, June 26, 2008

A police officer killed three suspected robbers in an alleged shootout after he caught them in the act of robbing a 30-year-old woman in Mandaluyong City at dawn yesterday.

Senior Inspector Hoover Pascual, assigned at the station’s anti-illegal drugs special operations task force (SAID-SOTF), said he emptied his 12-gauge shotgun at the three suspects, who fired at him when he identified himself as a policeman.

After the exchange of gunfire, Rodel Zaragosa and Alex Galicia, both of San Jose street, Barangay Mauway, and their unidentified companion lay dead.

Initial investigation showed that Pascual was on his way to visit his father on Coronado street when he chanced upon the three suspects grabbing the handbag of businesswoman Lot Guillena, 30, who was walking home at about 3:30 a.m.

The robbers were in a tricycle (LN-9685), said Senior Superintendent Carlos de Sagun, Mandaluyong City police chief.

“I noticed that they were armed with handguns so I decided to accost them,” said Pascual, adding he grabbed his 12-gauge shotgun before rushing out of his vehicle.

De Sagun said responding Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered two .38 caliber revolvers from the slain suspects.

A sachet containing white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu or methamphetamine hydrochloride was also found tucked in Zaragosa’s waistband.

De Sagun said the suspects have pending robbery cases in the city. “Galicia is also involved in burglary syndicate that victimizes houses in Barangay Hulo,” he said.

The police authorities are coordinating with the suspects’ families.

Metro Manila police chief Director Geary Barias recommended Pascual for spot promotion, saying that “although he was outnumbered, he didn’t think twice in facing the robbers to save the victim.” – With Cecille Suerte Felipe

It bespeaks of a display of proficiency in handling police weapons and calmness in the face of danger while dealing with the situation.

If the report has no flaws, this cop has a colorful future as an example to be emulated.

Keep up the excellent job Capt. Pascual ! You have added laurels to the cap of the PNP's finest.

The policeman killed two of the suspects during a shootout. Responding policemen, meanwhile, arrested a third suspect identified as Michael Quismo, who denied that he was with the slain robbers.

It was thirty minutes past 12 midnight. I was walking on my way home when hecklers were provoking a gang residing in an adjacent village. Then they started unleashing their belts and hitting each other with them and parrying them with their coats. Malamig simbang kabi. The other gang was outnumbered. One of them run away. He came back with a gun (.45 pistol). He fired it in air. In about 30 seconds General Pedro Juachon (He personally foiled the coup d'eta) arrived in the crime scene and scolded the perpetrators. I was not only impressed with his valour but also his immediate response. I said to myself, "Maybe my neighbour Tito Pete was watching over me?"
