Title: Bidding for PA/PAF 1-1/4 ton troop carrier
Description: which would you like for our PA / PAF?

see http://www.dnd.gov.ph

Bidding for 500-600units of 1-1/4 ton troop carrier

What would you choose for our troops?
Mitsubishi canter 4x4
KIA 4x4 troop carrier
CHINA-made 4x4 truck

I hear the china-made trucks are prime candidates since they have lower prices, but do you think it would be more expensive in the long run? maintenance-wise.

saver111 - April 24, 2007 01:31 PM (GMT)
Hmmm...

Let's go fo KIA. They might support us for parts for those M-35 trucks look-a-likes they donated.

Or like in the discussion made in the other forum, we can get host trucks from these manufacturers with standard bodies that can be emplaced made by sub-contractors like Steelcraft.

Is this the new light utility transport of PA?

Just like in the M-35, different manufacturers, standard design. We give opportunity for everybody, more jobs as well as a chance to develop defense equipments.

flipzi - April 24, 2007 02:28 PM (GMT)
Saver is right.

My pick is the CANTER though. But since Korea has donated some, and if we can purchase the model similar to what the Koreans delivered (i meant the parts) then KIA maybe is a good choice.

The AFP can decide which is better by looking into the maintenance concern, peformance and of course, the payment scheme.

I'll go for Kia.

Kia is a long time military vehicle supplier to the SoKor armed forces and therefore has extensive experience in this field.

And Korea just recently gave a lot of Kia-made trucks to us.

sgtbilko - April 25, 2007 05:16 AM (GMT)
Personally, i'd choose the KIA, they are going to supply the KM450, similar to the American M715. these are being used by ROK troops in Iraq. since canter body is only commercial specs. KIA is mil specs.

DND approach to this bidding is good. direct to manufacturer only, no middleman, since this is P1.2B bidding. but i hear some fishy news that china-made commercial trucks will win this bid. due to price. hmmmm. whatever happened to quality?

even heard some rumors that it didn't go through the right passages, since other manufacturer went to PA RDC first for vehicle testing & evaluation prior to bidding. can someone clarify this?

The 1-1/4 ton troop carrier is 4x4. i think mitsubishi is going to supply commercial canter trucks with converted rear cargo bay to accomodate troops. Bad thing amount this is low survivability during frontal impact. Wala kasi nguso yun truck.

KIA is owned by Hyundai, it should be using hyundai engines. Hyundai engines are copycat to Mitsubishi engines, even the parts are interchangable. Starex owners know this. parts should be cheap.

Does anyone have pictures for Isuzu 4x4 troop carriers?

Mungo can travel cross-country carrying 10 fully equipped soldiers, Mueller added. It weights a total of 5.3 tons and can achieve top speeds of 90 km/hr. The vehicle can load onboard a range of aircraft including CH-53, CH-47, C-130, C-160 and A-400M.

“At the same time, it offers an extremely high level of protection against anti-personnel mines as well as standard and armor-piercing ammunition,” Mueller said. “The Mungo’s superb mobility is assured by the commercial off-the-shelf MULTICAR chassis with all-wheel drive, differential locks, electronic traction control, anti-lock brake system, run-flat tires and creep speed, especially on rough ground.”

The basic version of the vehicle can carry personnel or materiel and quickly convert to use for one or both of those purposes. Two other variants are in development, Mueller added.

“One possesses a flexible hydraulic transportation system for cargo containers, while the driver compartment is still highly protected against [ballistic hazards] and mine protection DM31,” he explained. “The latest variant is currently being developed with an extended all-protected group compartment. It allows universal applications in a wide variety of service branches, while still being air-deployable in a CH-53 helicopter.”

The third version of the Mungo would have 360-degree protection against ballistic threats, as well as an air conditioning and a nuclear, biological and chemical protection system, making it suitable for use in command and control, reconnaissance, detecting weapons of mass destruction, medical missions, and other operations.

Cute vehicle saver. Won't snipers just takeout the troops riding at the back 1 by 1?
Also, what would happen if a grenade was thrown inside? :scared:

Haven't seen the model Isuzu offered for this bidding. hope it looks like the Hino in your previous posting. :aberet: POGI!

We could make our own design based on our situational needs and those available Elfs, Canters, L-300. Maybe standardized that can be installed on those different host trucks.

THIS TOYOTA MEGA CRUISER IS LIKE THE HUMMER, MIGHT AS WELL BE CHEAPER THAN THE HUMMER, HOEFULLY...

I'd go for a Kia. Nakapagmaneho ako ng CERES nila noong unang labas nito dito. Very matibay except for that handbrake bit (ni-lock ko sa first gear na lang kapag park).

Maybe we should upgrade our M-35 truck and put up-armor kits like the PMC are doing to their M-35 trucks like these

To increse soldiers survivavility in case of ambush and minimize casualties. But they should put roofing incase that grenade is thrown towards the rear part of the truck.

The contract has already been awarded to KIA with contract price of around P1.2-1.5B. i think its a pretty good buy since its MIL SPECS.

Zero wing - August 11, 2007 06:21 PM (GMT)
I like the MX 8 better

sgtbilko - August 12, 2007 05:41 AM (GMT)
The KIA 4x4 will be used solely as a troop carrier. they will still need the MX8 to escort the troop carrier's to safety since the KIA 4x4's are unarmored. they'd be easy prey without an armored escort. Simba's & v-150's will be too big for escort missions. Also, Kia 4x4 and the MX8's mitsubishi engine have compatible parts, this will be good news for their logistics! :specool:

Filipino soldiers sit on top of a military truck as they wait for deployment inside a military camp in Quezon City, east of Manila, Philippines on 20 October 2007. Metro Manila were placed under tight watch by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) after Friday's Glorietta mall blast in Makati City that killed at least nine people and injured more than a hundred others.

Noticed it just recently but nice find...a 10-troop truck that's light and narrow it's internally transportable via CH53/47. What the Wiesel is to tracked armor, the Mungo must be to transport trucks.

The cuteness may have to do with the demand for helo-portability. The same concerns with snipers and grenades haven't stopped us from moving troops via open 6x6 trucks.

Also, anybody else dislike the truck config below?

These are useful in the seconds of embarking/disembarking but they would usually do so a good distance away from their target area so the rapid exit advantage isn't that compelling. We also still load/unload troops from 6x6s from the rear.

I've also seen trucks like these with outward-facing seats careening down EDSA and the soldiers or police inside have to hold on to dear life seemingly for the fear (warranted or not) of falling out of the vehicle.

The Mungo vehicle cited earlier may thus present a compromise solution for the need for a light utility truck that can transport a squad while having rapid entry/exit options.

A Mungo or a clone perhaps.

German trucks said not tough enough for Afghanistan

http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/144000.html

Berlin - The German Army is to stop using a troop-carrying truck in Afghanistan after breakdowns on that nation's stony roads, according to a news report Sunday. The newspaper Welt am Sonntag said the Defence Ministry had confirmed to an opposition politician that the 28 Mungo trucks, which are made by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), would be brought home.

The suspension and axles of the Mungo, a four-wheel truck with armoured sides that can carry platoons, have been criticized as not robust enough.

The Mungos had not proved practical in Afghanistan, according to the ministry.

The trucks were sent of Afghanistan to offer German soldiers better protection from stray bullets than the 283 smaller, jeep-style Mercedes Wolf cars which are the main motor vehicle used as a runabout by the German peacekeepers.
