To all who cares about our rich history, pls dont lose hope. Be proud and do your part as a Filipino citizen, respect our flag & our government. Be a law abider and love your neighbors as yourself.
My friends, you might find it too long and too boring though, but to those who are unaware, pls read on.
You know our country had been plaqued with misfortune since the early 80's, and this is the only first time my country have tasted another economic miracle since the 60's. You are maybe wondering sometimes why most of the filipinos are so proud, this is because we do indeed have a very rich history. Even our beloved country has became a favorite paradise of many foreigners until before the great second world war broke out. Since then, some are still finding their way here to make businesses or enjoy all the pleasures that our islands can offer.
Long before the spaniards came, our nation had already been well civilized, thanks to chinese ancient traders & settlers. When the spanish arrived, they brought with them the teachings of christianity to many filipinos and colonized us for 333 years. Then came the americans who brought the literature/education with them, then lastly the japanese who brought arts for us. All of them have colonized our islands but never conquered us. They all fell inloved w/ our islands and wanted to settle here. As for the americans, they almost turned us into their another commonwealth states like what they did in hawaii, saipan, & guam around the pacific region. Unfortunately, we all paid the prices as well for letting these conquistadors into our soil.
They all have similarity in style, they all raped, tortured, harassed, discriminated, killed & massacred millions of innocent filipinos. The americans alone have killed morethan 1.8 million filipino citizens during the philippine-american war between 1901-1914. But we all fought them back, and we have convinced them that our islands are not for them and they dont belong here.
Despite of these colonizations, it didn't stop the flow of foreigners who came to live and work here.
That also made us the most international nation among all asians, and the most westernized. That was the reason why some of our neighboring asians even thought we are more of latinos than asians because of our mixed race and spanish language. BTW, spanish language used to be our 2nd, now it has been demoted down to our 3rd language and replaced by english ever since the americans came in the early 1900s. A proof of this is our national language, "Tagalog", that is made of borrowed words from spanish, americans, japanese, chinese, indians, even some from our 77 local filipino tribes, & the malays. This is no wonder why our country is so hard to lead, and most of our past leaders didn't last long. Aside from having 7,107 islands, we also have more than 70 different local tribes and w/ their dialects. On top of this, those naturalized filipinos, like those italians, french, germans, israelites, & other europeans, asians, and americans! Funny part there eh? But its true.
Before WWII, many europeans and our neighboring asians have came to philippines to live and work. We even gave sheltered to thousands of jews who also have considered our country their second home. These foreigners have helped our economy bigtime, but when all these seen collapsed when the japanese invaded us. This is also the reason why we became the favorite mediator in asia, we mediate almost every asian conflics since then, specially the korean affairs. This is because they trust us, they see us as a non-asians rather some kind of a latinos or europeans because of our language and culture. But that made us a very unique asian nation, as we are the only christian nation among all of them.
There was also a time when we reached the second biggest asian economy after japan during the 60's, and that also made us a very attractive place for foreigners to invest, and all these continued until the early years of Ferdinand Marcos' administration. But years of glory days have gone down when his leadership shifted to bad mode, and that's when the muslim separatists took advantage of us and the situation gone worst when the communisms had spread across the islands, influenced by the chinese and our close relation with cuba & libya that time.
Indeed we have more things to be proud of, but our war against terrorrism is becoming too unpopular and this is painting us with bad images. After the Marcoses left in 1986, we supposed to correct everything, but the administration who succeeded him have failed to do the right thing and blew up our chances.
Since then, we worked harder and strived for peace and harmony. Glory years seem to be over not until Gloria Macapagal Arroyo came to power 3 yrs ago, and since then we seem to have learned to move on, and we seem to have finally learned our hard lesson despite many are still out there who are extremely corrupted, specially those in our government, a result from decades of having bad leaders, and our little unpopular war against the muslim separatists in mindanao, communists in the north, and finally those terrorrists who long for nothing but shedding the blood of their own brothers and sisters.
There is another serious problem going on in the philippines, and that is our bloating population. Since our nation is dominated by the roman catholic church, their flawed mixed pagan/christianity beliefs are making the situation worst. The church never believed in the use of contraceptives. They only like the natural birth control system. Now that makes our economic supply and demand becoming out of control. Thats why the rich are becoming richer, and the poor are becoming poorer.
There are more to say but its getting longer.
Despite of these bad images, im still proud to be a canadian-filipino. Im telling you, i wouldn't be here in canada if its not because of our past 3 worst than ferdinand marcos' administrations. Things could have been different by now, and our supply & demand should have been properly catching up with our population, so our government could have provided us with food and work. Now our national budget is having a hard time to catch up, but still give thanks to our current president who is well educated and an economist. She also promised us to bring the philippines to the first world nation in 20 yrs as of last year. Prior to this, she succeeded in bringing our nation back to 2nd world class nation, and i hope one day we all bring back our lost Glory years. Thank you.
Thats all for now, and I hope it informed you well, my friends. Take good care all of you, and mabuhay tayong lahat!
