The Pre-WW2 Philippine Military Academy.
-Maintained a ratio of one officer instructor for every four cadets.
-there were a dozen different types of uniforms for cadets, all uniforms and equipment, down to the last ribbon and brass button were imported from the U.S.
-the full dress gray uniform was made by the same U.S. company which manufactured gray wool uniforms for West Point.
-all cadets were trained in "equitation", or horsemanship. PMA maintained a stable of high breed horses.

These are fine men.
Interesting!
Probably, the EDSA1 hype was instrumental in turning these men to be among the finest in the military.
The PMA should take a hint from that.

Uncle Bobo is the name of the PMA Corps Magazine (The Official Publication of the PMA), he depicts a cadet who never seem to graduate from the academy.

I think its more of the circumstances more than anything else, and the camaraderie developed between officers and soldiers in combat.
Take the case of then Lt. Col. Ariel Querubin, he exposed his position so that marine artillery can spot the enemy position, he rallied his men and serve as their inspiration in holding the line.
Then Capt. Arturo Ortiz lead elements of the 606th Special Forces deatachment in Murcia, Negros Occidental when they spotted an NPA graduation ceremony.
Then 1Lt. Custodio Parcon of the 61st Recon Company was tasked to rescue Abu Sayaff hostage Anthony Biel.
Those who have seen combat would say that their personal and their unit's survival is what they have in mind in those times.

PMA? Why would PMA take hints on that? Remember those who you mentioned as fine men are products of PMA...what you are saying is common knowledge to every PMAer. The rest (Gen. Garcia, etc.) were the bad apples. Still, the good ones outnumber the bad. It would be better if all Filipinos would take hint...that includes Politicians.

I meant inspiring the cadets by emphasizing that most of the products of PMA have done great and have served the country well.
Sadly, the misdeeds of the few are shrouding these great achievements.
But the academy as well as the OCS must do a lot in defeating these grim stories with the acts of heroism exemplified by fine men like Sobejana, Ortiz, Querubin, Dilag and the rest.

It is very shameful to learn about the misdeeds of some few...the Cadets are humiliated by these and are not happy to hear about the Bad Apples. But then again, not all would be able to absorb the Honor, Courage, Integrity and Loyalty that PMA teaches. There will always be bad apples in every class.
Worry not, Cadets are being bombarded by Case Studies of actual incidents in the Field/Real World which, IMHO, really works and it trains every individual how to respond and react to a certain situation when the time comes.

Good to know.
By the way, I was comparing an ayer who graduated from the PMA around 6 years ago to a newly grad from the same institution.
Seems like a big difference. The former boasted of saying "... yayaman na tayo. dami pala pera sa Navy".
The latter through his action has shown the right mindset when he "refused to be bribed by an illegal fisherman who wanted to secure his fishing gears that were confiscated".
With this, it seems like the latter graduates are much more ......., should i say,.... mentally straightened.

didu - June 27, 2008 12:55 PM (GMT)
If I may ask sirs, how come the term "laxitibo" became associated with the inability of a cadet to clean his combat boots?
The closest translation I can muster is "laxative" which if I'm not mistaken has nothing to do with combat boots.
BARBER 6 - June 27, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
The meaning given to the word "LAXITIBO" is incorrect. The word is a derivative or it evolve from the word LAX, as in "you are very LAX" which means you are sub-par from the STANDARDS. It then became, through the years, "LAKSITIBO KA".
MAGAN - From SON OF A GUN...then SANAMAGAN....to MAGAN. It means STUBBORN or can also mean STRICT.
Dreamrider - June 27, 2008 11:59 PM (GMT)
Its interesting to know the cadets have developed their own lingo, just like the gays, they could probably talk about sensitive matters in public places without the civilians understanding what they are saying.
