Title: Direct-fire 81mm mortar

Why not a direct-fire 81mm mortar?

A direct-fire version would be cheaper, lighter, shorter than the Cockerill 90 or direct-fire 120mm mortar. It also doesn't have the backblast of the 106RR, so it can conceivably be mounted in a turret.

It would bust MG positions or many bunker types. Flechette could deal with massed formations encountered recently. It could get at high-elevation targets and still be used in indirect-fire mode. It can fire smoke marker rounds for supporting aircraft.

And it would be something that could be mounted onto some Simbas/V150s, maybe even the proposed Barako.

I'm hoping a local company could look into this.

A good description of such a 1960s-era weapon: http://pcf45.com/misfire/mortar.html
(Note: As used then, it could also be mounted in riverine or coastal patrol boats)

Nope, the link says: “The muzzle-loaded mortar was fired either by drop-fire or the trigger system.” A breech-loading version would be required for mounting in an enclosed turret.
