Title: From Ford F550 to Gurkha LAV
Description: another AEV option for the Phil. Army

Kampilan - October 15, 2007 05:00 AM (GMT)
Steelcraft's MX8 cost reportedly rose to almost 10 million pesos, the Gurkha LAV,which is based on the Ford F550 chassis could be had at only US$200,000.

If serial production of the MX8 will ultimately prove to be prohibitively expensive for the PA, then I suggest this vehicle which is produced by Canada's Armet Armored Vehicles:

A Canadian firm (Armet Armored Vehicles Ltd. ) has joined the growing list of organizations that convert commercial trucks into armored combat vehicles. In this case, a Ford F550 truck chassis is converted into a bullet proof, and blast resistant, combat SUV. Armet calls it the Gurkha LAV (Light Armored Vehicle). The 8.6 ton vehicle has a top road speed of 150 kilometers an hour. The vehicle can carry two tons of cargo. It has a gun turret, and sits four. Armet actually sells a conversion kit. You can buy the F550 from a Ford dealer, and have truck mechanics install the kit. For dealers are found all over the planet, which simplifies support. The Gurkha kit is aimed at police organizations and armed forces with tight budgets. Usually, armored trucks cost over half a million dollars. But the Gurkha can be had for about $200,000, and not cost you a lot of money to maintain. Many countries, including Canada and the United States have bought the Gurkha for use in combat zones.

MX8 only costs P4.5M per unit contrary to misconceptions. I think the ford F550 series has gasoline-fed engines right?

But they are really nice and tough looking vehicles!

Army sources say cost ballooned to 10M to date.

Ford's powerful Diesel Duratorq or Power Stroke engines are widely available.

Just confirmed P4.5M. Maybe P10M for both prototypes, maybe they added some PA personnel overhead costs. Hope your sources are not the people out to ruin this project for personal interests. :nono:

This is just my opinion, mind you. We should still support Steelcraft's MX-8 as we need to push for self-reliance. Besides, that machine was designed for combat from the bottom up unlike that Ford which was modified to suit such a role. Ibang iba ang dalawa. I would not go into combat with a vehicle na adapted lang when it was originally designed for civilian use lang.

We could probably make use of this Ford idea to develop armored ambulances na lang than as a combat vehicle. Kung ganyan rin lang naman ang path why not resurrect the Sarao line and adapt our jeepneys into such. Mas matibay naman at kabisado pa ng any Filipino mechanic worthy of the title of mechanic to fix it.

If Steelcraft only got P4.5M for the first prototype, san napunta ung 2M? Its getting clearer why no paper trail exists for this project.

The Gurkha decidedly looks more solidly built than the Barako :armyeek:

kropek:

are you implying sir that 6.5 m was the declared price of the 1st prototype?
If so the 2m went to the deep pockets of some in the Army.

Wala na ba talagang malinis na proyekto sa hukbong sandatahan ngayon?

These ones are not even U or V shaped hulls.

They're chassis mounted. U.S. soliders call these mine traps. since the chassis acts as a magnet which absorbs most of the impact of land mines instead of having a smooth surface to dispurse the kinetic energy.
