about time the Army cleans up: torture, abductions, 'salvagings' have been proven to be largely ineffective in curtailing insurgency and could even bolster the enemy's recruitment efforts.

Manila sacks army officer over torture allegations

MANILA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The Philippines stripped an army lieutenant of his command and sent his 100-member unit on a "cultural sensitivity" course after an investigation into charges of torture of three men, an officer said on Wednesday.

The three men, two of them members of a local tribe, were arrested on Mindoro island, south of Manila, early in October on suspicion they were members of the communist New People's Army.

In their sworn statements, the men said they were forced to admit they were rebels and made to produce "guns and documents".

When they failed, they were stripped of their clothes, beaten and water was poured into their noses.

"There was an investigation done by our higher headquarters after we got complaints from the local community," said Lieutenant-Colonel Arnie Matanguihan. "We cannot tolerate human rights abuse."

This is the kind of Army we want!

PROFESSIONAL, DISCIPLINED and BROADMINDED.

This young LT failed to realize that in torturing the poor fellow he might have indeed neutralized another SUSPECT... but that act will infuriate more to join the rebellion.

The result? ..... MORE REBELS. Plain and simple.

"Our troops would be asked to take part in some tribal ritual next month as a symbol of settling the problem," he added.

It's a good start. :thumb:

I commend the Army top brass.

GOOD JOB, SIRS! :thumb:

Remember.... YOU CANNOT DISCIPLINE SOMEONE IF YOU ARE UNDICIPLINED.

You cannot earn the people's trust if you don't project the character of someone they can trust.

a LT that commands a 100-man unit? maybe the LT was overwhelmed with his responsibilities, parang hinog sa pilit.

if the army can sustain these initiatives then they will surely the trust and confidence from the public that they lost due to previous unmitigated abuses.

Yes a LT can command a 100-man unit...not the regular TOE but it happens most of the time.
