Title: Path to a reserve officer

ian - October 5, 2004 02:44 PM (GMT)
How do I become a reserve officer? I'm currently in 4th year high school right now and I'm joining ROTC when I get to college next year. After graduating from advance ROTC, do I automatically get a reserve 2nd Lt. rank?

adroth - October 5, 2004 11:13 PM (GMT)
No, a commission is not automatic. Here are relevant sections of RA 7077:

QUOTE ("Article 8 Sec. 46")

Disposition of Graduates of Advance ROTC. -Those who successfully completed the advance ROTC course shall be recommended for commission in the reserve as second lieutenants and assigned to the reserve units and mobilization centers in their provinces. Those with manifest potential may be commissioned in the regular force as second lieutenants subject to the criteria for regular officers of this rank for that particular service. Those who fail to complete the course shall be conferred the enlisted rank of sergeant or its equivalent and similarly assigned to reserve units and mobilization centers. Probationary training as a requisite before commissionship shall be determined by the major service concerned based on technical skills, experiences or qualifications of the applicants.

If you are joining an Army ROTC unit, I suggest asking around about MS-43 (the final Advance ROTC course is called MS-42). The names of the courses change from time to time, but the need for one has always been there.

QUOTE ("Excerpt from Article 8 Sec. 45")

. . . the quota for noncommissioned officers shall not exceed five percent (5%) of the authorized strength of the unit to which the reservists shall be assigned after graduation: Provided, further, That those to be awarded rank above private shall be chosen based on merit. Those who continue to the advance ROTC course shall continue to carry their enlisted rank until their successful completion of advance ROTC.

Performance on the PMA admission exam has no bearing on admission to ROTC, so there should be no problems.

Some people even proceed to the PMA after completing the Advance ROTC course. (Check this out) So they enter the PMA with college degrees, as well as familiarity with the rudiments of military life.

I know of some people who dropped out of the boot camp phase of admission (this is after passing physical, but before actually going to Baguio); went to College and finished ROTC; retook the PMA entrance exam; and made it into the PMA.

what is OCC, OCS and TRADOC PA , what do they do?

and one more question sir I know the minimum height requirement for PMA is 5'4" , im 15 yrs old and already 5"8" tall, if I grow as tall as 6'2", is there also no height limit?

because i heard that too tall applicants are not accepted...

ian - October 10, 2004 03:56 PM (GMT)
Taas mo naman dido! Ako 5'5 lang. Hehe. Anyway, d ko naman plano maging PMAer dahil i want to pursue other courses, but I still want to be a reserve officer. So after graduating from advance ROTC as a 1st class cadet, what do I do next to become a reserve officer?

OCS - Officer Candidate School
TRADOC - Training and Doctrine Command (may be slightly off on this one)

I'm not aware of a maximum height limitation, but being tall makes you conspicuous . . . in a training environment where being inconspicuous means fewer hassles.

It would be definitely be hard for you to become a flyer or a tanker if you are too tall.

One more thing also - tall people need bigger foxholes.

Hey guys! Question. I plan to take up either nursing or medicine in college. Pag pumasok ba ako sa army hanggang sa medical core lang ba ako malalagay?

Duminus - October 14, 2004 08:15 AM (GMT)
Most likely or if you want to be in harm's way apply for combat medic rating in any of the AFP's spec ops units.

ian - October 14, 2004 01:48 PM (GMT)
Yes, I intend to apply probably sa SR or SF, when I get in the Army. Will the choice of my college course affect my promotion in the military? :aberet:

Its effect on promotion will depend on its effect on how you were admitted.

For example, if you were accepted because of your medical expertise, the I would seriously doubt if you could easily shift to a combat track. I could be mistaken on this one, but AFP doctors are too few, and too valuable to risk out on the field.

Try checking with Jepot on the original Phil Defense forum

As a commandant once told me. Specialists (JAGO, medical corps) can only aspire to be heads of their branch of specialization. Although my commandant became a lawyer while he was a soldier, he opted not to leverage his law credentials because he'd be stuck in a slower promotion track.

******

Looking at the requirements from PN, PCG to PNP, I believe it is almost the same with the PA and PAF, a college graduate is accepted. Maybe for the PN and PAF which are considered technical services, specialties in line with their missions are preferred. If she opts to get a second degree maybe aim for those specialize courses as well as those support ones like, medical, nursing, dental, etc. and just hope she doesn't end up over-aged.

Once accepted, it is up to her if she could tackle the physical aspects of OCS.

sir wickedsoul,

add nfo: just advice ur friend to try applying now. report to the nearest RCDG and ask for recommendation to take AFPTB. If she pass, then try completing requirements. Having failures in academic grades doesnt really mean having poor intellect. its up to her how she will support or answer questions during interviews. Passing apptitude test is one example to show your worth. GOGOGO, try it. after all nothing will lost. DIVah. :specool:

reservists is actually called community defense during the old times.

Although I often see them in training at our local CDC during those odd times I go there, I don't exactly know how often they train. I will try to ask around if I find time.

thanks saver111, for a very informative post! Actually, got the chance to inquire AFPRESCOM at Camp Aguinaldo and talked to a certain Ms. Ferrer, civilian employee of that Office. She told me to submit ToR, college diploma, cert. of employment, nbi clearance, and local clearances. Shel also told me that i have to undergo physical examination. She told me that i could be commissioned as technical reserve specifically at the MAC. She cannot assure that i will be commissioned in the army reserve since AFPRESCOM is AFP-wide commissionship body, army, navy, and air-force. I really want to be in the army reserve officer, no offense to the navy and air force reservists <hehe>. I already have the requirements but im holding it, with apprehension that i might not get the army.

My co-shooter opted to enlist in the "all-army" reserves at Fort Bonifactio. He undergone 15-training days, mostly during weekends. He graduated now and have a rank of TSG. He too had an MBA degree. He convinced me to join their group, but have my second thought. I really want to be an army reserve officer and not an "enlisted personnel". Again, no offense meant to my friends who are "active" enlisted men. I respect them very much!! :armycheers:
