yes, we do not have a naval academy that is similar to that of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis but i guess the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy in Zambales is a good training ground for prospective navy personnel. there are also some PMA cadets who opt to enter Navy service.

i hope that this reply will be able to answer your question...

peace? ;)

Welcome to PDFF, 17er.

No problem about the question. Its not as if its a state secret or something... :D

As far as I know, the AFP gets its officers from 2 sources: the PMA and the ROTC. PMA grads get to choose which service of the AFP they will go. But I know PAF and PN have a quota, so if the quota is filled, the rest will have to go to the PA. Those who have higher grades will get to pick first. They enter the service as commissioned 2nd Lts. Of course, further training will be provided in each service. Like if you go to PAF, you'll receive further training at the PAF Flying School in Pampanga (Basa AB, I think).

As for the ROTC, once you've completed an ROTC course in college, you'll be commissioned as a reserve 2nd Lt. You can apply for activation if you want to go to active duty. I do not know if you can choose which service you wish to go through, though. Someone else here should be able to answer that.

Naval officers come from both PMA and the civilian sector. However, since we do not have a naval academy, naval officers undergo a Naval OFficer's Qualification Course. Previously, even PMAyers underwent this course although they were already commissioned officers when they did. Others from the civilian sector were probationary ensigns unless they were already commissioned in another branch. I understand that in PMA nowadays, cadets already choose their branch of service earlier so they have some training during summer.

:snipemo:

You may want to check this one:
http://www.navy.mil.ph/press_release/2005/march/2a.htm

and for Maniegom I was wondering if you can tell us more about the PN OCS. Photos will help too. And for the list of required courses for officer/enlisted. Are you saying that if your degree is not in the list you can't apply to the PN? Just wondering.
God bless . . .

maniegom - April 29, 2005 04:10 AM (GMT)
Sorry for my late reply as I am very busy nowadays in my new duty station. I am not the SME in that area friend nor have the right to represent our beloved PN since I am with the USN. I got my info from the PN website and they could be contacted if you would have any questions to be answered. Sorry.

Students from the Philippine Naval Education and Training Command tour the USS Coronado (AGF 11) with U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Romelda Sadiarin during the ship’s April 2004 port visit in Subic Bay, Philippines. The ship was serving as the temporary command ship for the U.S. Seventh Fleet while its flagship, the USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19), was undergoing maintenance. The USS Coronado was also experimenting with a unique manning concept. The crew of civilian mariners from the Military Sealift Command (MSC) and a small group of sailors had replaced the 481 sailors normally assigned to the USS Coronado. The combined MSC/Navy crew of 263, and some personnel from the USS Blue Ridge, supported the embarked Seventh Fleet staff.
