its just improbable in real life that the character of Jake Cuenca enters the PMS - a multi-millionaire has yet to become a cadet where 99% of cadets are there just for the the free education and the possibility of rags to rices future and not because of patriotism.
:)(: - January 30, 2009 01:00 AM (GMT)
not all cadets are from the poor sector, quite a lot are from the middle class.

Beg to disagree, I know people from well-off families who can definitely afford college education, yet chose to enter the academy.

Looks like this TV series is making an impact among the youth. My two young cousins who are going to graudate high school this year have expressed their interest in entering the PMA.
And mind you sir caterwaul, these two cousins belong to relatively well-off families who can very well afford to go to college in Europe or the US. :ssalute:

The son of the late Ramon Mitra, former speaker of the House of Representatives belonged to PMA class 1988, retired several years back from the Marine Corps. Can we say he went there for free education?

There are also who were Degree Holders already but still entered PMA...

How about the current commanders of the AFP and PNP from Yano to Versoza, ex PNP comptroller de la Paz and others of the ruling class, who among them came from multi-millionaire or well-off families when they were still cadets?

The one who typed it is dumber...
You are asking about percentage of middle class/upper class people compared to lower class people entering the Academy, do you have the figures that the lower class is greater than the upper class? If you don't, then you are just assuming and probably basing it from what other people are saying.
Yano, Versoza and Dela Paz are just a speck of the thousands of graduates of the Academy. You can't base your conclusion from just three persons...maybe those are the only ones you know who graduated from the Academy.
Besides what's wrong with the free education that the Academy offers? Does that mean that all scholarships being offered in different Schools are not also good since?
Sourgraping?

This is getting too tiring! What do you people find so bad about the graduates of PMA?
Fine, there are some bad apples or rotten eggs, whatever you want to call them. Pero meron din naman matino. Kung gusto ninyo patunayan na mas marami yung No-Go na cavaliers, then why don't you conduct an unbiased study on the subject. Track mo lahat ng grad ng PMA, mula sa umpisa, tapos categorize mo kung sino ang naging corrupt o nagrebelde, tapos compare mo dun sa mga naging matino. Don't forget to correlate the number of corrupt PMA alumni with the number from the poor sector of society. Pagkatapos, saka na kayo mag-generalize. Madali lang manira ng ibang tao o ng organisasiyon. Pero kung wala ka din naman ebidensiya, kahit anong ingay mo, hindi ka pa rin credible. You are just making yourself look like a fool.

my younger sister observed that many of the real cadets acting as extras in this telenobela are short, I told her that the minimum height for male cadets is 5'4". she retorted that its too short, she said officers should be taller to look more authoritative and imposing and besides, being 5'7" , she can't imagine dating a shorter PMA cadet. :ssalute:
what do you think sirs, should the minimum height be raised to 5'6" ?
btw, what's the height of Gen. Yano, there's a picture of him with a Singaporean defense official and he looked very short?

Philippines defence chief visits Singapore
[Photo: GEN Yano (left) calling on Mr Teo (right)]
The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, General (GEN) Alexander Yano, called on Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean at the Ministry of Defence Thursday morning.
He is the 38th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the highest position in the AFP hierarchy.
GEN Yano, who is in Singapore for a three-day introductory visit from February 4 to 6, also called on Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek.
He will visit the Army's Headquarters Training and Doctrine on February 6.
GEN Yano's visit underscores the warm and friendly defence ties between Singapore and the Philippines.
The Singapore Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of the Philippines interact regularly through courses and other professional exchanges.

if the height requirement is increased, majority of the male applicants will be disqualified bec 5'4" is the average height of Filipino males.

Did you know that a member of class 1983 belonged to a prominent family in one of Manila's districts? His family owned a pharmacy and they have apartments that are being rented out long before he entered tha PMA? He is now a full-colonel in the army.
Did you know that a member of class 1962 was already a college graduate when he entered the academy? Retired as a one-star in the early 90's.
I think our problem is stereo-typing the academy gradutes that they should be from poor families and once they enter the service, seems that they are not allowed to own properties such as a car or a house. Those who chose the profession of arms are also humans, they have concerns as civilians do, like how to feed their families, send their kids to school and probably enjoy little comfort in life, yet when they acheived it, they are perceived as corrupt, give them a break! No one is denying that there are indeed rotten apples, and yet there is a silent majority who still practice the Academy's motto.
Let me cite an example, if we see a colonel driving a brand new Toyota Altis, we are already forming conclusion that he is corrupt, we tend to forget that he is already serving 20+ years in the armed forces, probably has some savings since he was a 2LT and has access to different government institutions, hence, he could afford to buy a new car.
Yes, try researching how academy gradutes lived their lives.

Will the new lowered height requirement apply to incoming PMA cadets?
http://pdff.sytes.net/index.php?showtopic=6096
fatbat_mca - February 15, 2009 01:41 AM (GMT)
cadet applicants should still be minimum of 5'4", the new minimum height probably applies to the MOS mentioned in the article.
ctrlaltdel - February 15, 2009 06:27 AM (GMT)
bad idea, it will only cause discrimination if the 5 ft height requirement is applicable only to carpenters, technicians, etc. who want to join the AFP.
this should be an equal opportunity requirement across the AFP services and all ranks, including PMA applicants - uniform minimum 5 ft height.

I think it's possible, there are units of the PAF that are engaged in ground combat like the SPOW. I just forgot the name of the other units that are under OPCON of Army infantry brigades.
mazingu - March 8, 2009 02:06 AM (GMT)
...could be if Anderson's character is portraying a SPOW officer but the series has him undergoing pilot training at PAFFS.
