ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) deployed its combat forces to Basilan to augment government security forces in stumping the spate of kidnappings, according to officials.

A company of police combat force, under the Regional Mobile Group (RMG) was ferried by the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) gunboat this morning to an unspecified area in Basilan.

Chief Superintendent Angel Sunglao, Police Regional Office 9 director, declined to give details of the area of deployment for operation but said the massing of police forces was part of the re-organizational operation.

Sunglao said the reorganization of its forces in Basilan is part of the plan of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operation (DIPO) Western Mindanao to address the problem of kidnapping in the region.

Currently, rebel groups have been holding captive three public school teachers, a businessman abducted in Zamboanga City, a midwife, nine-year old boy and an employee of a lending agency.

The kidnappers of the teachers Janette delos Reyes, Rafael Mayonado, and Freires Quizon have demanded P6 million in ransom but the government has reiterated a no-ransom family.

The DIPO Western Mindanao have merged its operational enhancement Friday with the military after it formalized the operational tie-up through a memorandum of agreement signed by Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga and Chief Superintendent Felizardo Serapio, commander of Western Mindanao Command and DIPO Western Mindanao chief, respectively.
