President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will invite European countries to assist in investigating extrajudicial killings even though a "powerful" independent probe body is already in place, a Palace adviser said Friday.
National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said the President will issue the invitation when she embarks on her European visit next month.
Meanwhile, an eccumenical activist group on Monday warned Malacañang's newly formed panel to conduct thorough investigate extrajudicial killings to dispel fears of a whitewash by the administration.
Father Jerry Sabado, spokesman of the Promotion of Church People's Response (PCPR), said Melo and the other panel members should do a better job than the police's Task Force Usig.
"It should not be another mouthpiece of the military just like the Malacañang-created Task Force Usig which set an all-out efforts to establish that CPP-NPA elements are behind the killings of activists rather than ensure justice for the victims and the victims’ families," Fr. Sabado said.
Human rights group Karapatan has listed over 720 extrajudicial murders in the country since 2001, with activists comprising most of these victims.
Task Force Usig, meanwhile, lists less than 100 leftist slays during the same period.
