Turn yourself in by Jan 1, fugitive colonel warned

THE MILITARY on Wednesday warned an Army colonel allegedly involved in a destabilization attempt against the government that he faces dismissal if he does not surrender by New Year's Day.

Lieutenant Colonel Oscarlito Mapalo, who escaped from Camp Aguinaldo military headquarters on December 21, should turn himself in to face a pre-trial investigation on his alleged violations of the Articles of War, Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual, a military spokesman, said.

On Tuesday, Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Efren Abu ordered a manhunt for Mapalo, who could face a court martial for publicly criticizing the military's promotion system.

Mapalo had been restricted to headquarters prior to his escape.

"He can run, but he can't hide," Pascual said in a statement.

Mapalo, and Colonel Jose Gamus are being questioned over their alleged involvement in a foiled attempt to topple the government by agitating the mammoth crowd that attended the burial of movie star and defeated presidential candidate, Fernando Poe Jr. last December 22.

Mapalo escaped last December 21, after tricking his two guards, Sergeant Alfredo Leonillo and Private First Class Alvin Albao, into believing that he would visit a friend, Pascual said.

Leonillo and Albao have been restricted to barracks and placed under investigation, he said.

i wish he will be caught soon and punished, adventurism is not the solution to the country's problems - officers and enlisted need only practice honesty and honor and many problems in the military will be solved......

Now, who wants to kill him?

QUOTE
A fugitive Philippine officer who went into hiding after being linked to an alleged destabilization plot against President Gloria Arroyo said Tuesday he cannot surrender because there is a plot to kill him.

"I have news from a reliable source that I will be killed. My source is connected. He is a high-ranking government official," said Lieutenant Colonel Oscarlito Mapalo who is subject of a manhunt by the military.

Mapalo told reporters by telephone he would only surface if he was guaranteed a fair trial but said he did not believe he would get a fair hearing from the military chief of staff General Efren Abu after criticizing him over the military's promotions system.

Can someone provide a list of all escapees (and dates) from Camp Aguinaldo's detention facilities over the past several years?

I wish we would all be more circumspect when we read the newspapers. Try reading the pro "oppposition" media also lest we all become victims of propaganda.

If you are referring to the detention facilities at the ISAFP compund in Camp Aguinaldo, I cannot think of a succesful escape from that facility in recent history.
