ARMM Gov lauds Army

Koronadal City (20 March) -- Regional Gov. Datu Zaldy Uy Ampatuan of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) lauded the Philippine Army on its 112th Foundation Anniversary for its great role in the nation-building especially on maintaining peace and security in the country.

In Cotabato City, the week-long celebration started last Thursday, March 19, 2009 with a kick-off program at the City Plaza. Officers and men from the 6th Infantry Division, officials from the ARMM, Cotabato City and the media graced the event.

The 6th ID showed off their elite forces composed of the Scout Rangers, Special Forces and the Infantry in full combat gear at the plaza grounds. The command's artillery and armored regiments were also displayed for public viewing.

"The Philippine Army is invaluable in establishing a rock-solid foundation for the region's economy. Our partnership is crucial in bringing development to the region and in ensuring that there is an equitable distribution of the socio-economic gains we are making," says Ampatuan in his message delivered by ARMM Solicitor General Atty. Frances Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi.

Ampatuan also underscored the Army's bravery and contribution in maintaining peace and order in the region especially in neutralizing the threat of terrorism and insurgents in the region.

The Governor expressed his support for sustainable programs for the benefit of the Philippine Army members including their families and beneficiaries.

"We also support for the modernization of the Army to increase its capability and efficiency to go after insurgents, terrorists and other threats to the security and stability of the country.

6th Infantry Division Commanding General Major General Alfredo S. Cayton said that this year's celebration is focused on making the people understand the significance of the Army's efforts and sacrifices in nation-building.

"This year's theme: "Kasama ng Mamamayan Tungo sa Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran" stresses our role and presence in our communities to uphold peace and order for there could never be any development without the atmosphere of peace," Cayton said.

General Cayton said that the weeklong celebration in the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division will be devoted to humanitarian activities together with local government units, concerned government agencies and non-government organizations in delivering basic services to less fortunate citizens in support to health programs and disaster preparedness.

The kick-off program culminated with the ceremonial setting-off of balloons bearing the celebration's theme as a unified gesture of outcry against the compelling chains of anxiety, chaos, and disunity that befell Mindanao. (bpi-armm/PIA9-BST)
