GMA orders DENR to defer to Corpuz on reforestation, anti-illegal logging matters http://www.news.ops.gov.ph/today.htm#GMA%20orders BAGUIO CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to take instructions on all matters pertaining to logging from Retired Gen. Victor Corpus, her newly-appointed anti-illegal logging and reforestation czar.
The President made the order during a press conference here Monday night where she is spending the holiday season.
"When these disasters happened, I added to his functions to fight illegal logging and he will be supported by the Armed Forces of the Philippines," the President said, referring to Corpus, who is also chairman of the Natural Resources Development Corporation.
Fears that what happened to Quezon and Nueva Ecija, where typhoon induced flashfloods and landslides devastated thousands of families, might be repeated in the Cordilleras were allayed by the DENR when it reported that although there was a reduction in the forest cover from 85 percent to 50 percent, the people of Cordilleras has an indigenous culture of maintaining root crops beside their farms.
"That is the culture by itself. So it is sustainable by itself," the DENR said.
The DENR said it had expanded collaboration with local government units (LGUs) in the Cordilleras. It had also identified critical areas that are potential for flooding that is done region-wide.
